‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’: Snuneymuxw Community Planning

Your Voice Matters

hay cep qa’ for taking the time to learn and share your feedback on the ‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’: Community Master Plan including the te’tuxwtun Addition to Reserve processes.

Your participation helps ensure that Snuneymuxw knowledge and culture are at the forefront of this process. Whether you are here in Snuneymuxw or away from home, a high school student or an Elder, we invite ideas from all our members.

Your ideas are important, and we need your voice. As a member of this community, you are part of a collective knowledge that stretches back to the beginning of time. We need your experience and perspective to help restore our presence throughout the territory, so that our children, and their children, feel welcome and at home. How can we develop neighbourhoods that help our families thrive?

We have always been here, and we will be here forever.

te’tuxwtun Addition to Reserve Vote
Former DND Lands | 194.6 Acres

These Snuneymuxw First Nation lands, at one time known as Camp Nanaimo, have always been home to the Snuneymuxw people. Almost 200 acres were returned to our Nation in 2024 as addition to reserve lands

The draft community plan above was informed by Snuneymuxw members through our community planning engagement in 2023. Download PDF here

From April–September 2025, members are invited to learn more and engage through various community events, online surveys, in-person meals and online meetings.

Before September 2025, SFN members will vote on how our Nation would like to honour and make use of the 194.6 acre parcel of te’tuxwtun land.

Prior to this vote, we ask that you share your ideas for the future of this sacred Land through our online survey. By participating in this project, you ensure that Snuneymuxw knowledge and culture are at the forefront of this process. You honour our ancestors, the big work of our community and help us plan for the future together.

We will have an updated survey coming very soon!

‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’: Community Planning

‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’ means “I am here” in hul’q’umi’num’.

For our community, this means, “The Land, I am here. The Ancestors, I am here. The residents, I am here. All three, in our hearts and minds, have been invisible. We are working to restore their voices and honour our way of being.” – Joan Brown, Chief Administrative Oice, SFN.

The ‘i’ cun ‘uw ‘i’: Community Planning Document outlines the vision and key priorities for SFN Lands and Waters. It gives comprehensive information on 38 dierent land parcels, seing out the potential uses for each area.

Your participation in our in-person and online surveys and events will help turn our shared vision for the future of our Nation into reality.

Programs
  • Engage with the youth of the community as they are the ones who will  experience the most severe impacts of climate change on Snuneymuxw resources.
  • Incorporate Snuneymuxw traditional knowledge as the driving force behind the western science we leverage to gather information and build working relationships with government, educational, and private sector organizations to restore Snuneymuxw's role as steward of the coast. 4. Ensure the security and safety of our traditional foods
  5. Build the capacity of our staff
  6. Encourage continuing education
