On-reserve affordable rental housing funded through BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund with an ongoing operating subsidy. These units are now fully occupied. This project is located on IR#4, is targeting a high level of energy efficiency, and offers 8 units in 2 four plexes:
2. Nicol Street
A 35-unit supportive housing project, with four fully accessible units and 24/7 supports, will be owned by BC Housing and operated by Snuneymuxw, and will provide housing for Snuneymuxw members and Indigenous Peoples experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the community. This project is pending a building permit to start construction.
Once completed, the new permanent supportive homes at 355 Nicol Street would provide supportive housing for Snuneymuxw members and other Indigenous People experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
3. Xpey Selhni
Xpey Selhi, Cedar Woman House, is a safe place for women and their children who are experiencing or at-risk of violence. We will offer 42 units, with a mix of studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units, as well as counselling space and amenity space. The large site opens onto a large green space and provides a protective place for children to play within the communal courtyard created by the building design. Xpey Selhni has a Development Permit from the City of Nanaimo and has submitted a Building Permit application.
4. Kennedy Street
In response to an identified rental affordability gap caused by significant rental rates in the Greater Nanaimo area, Snuneymuxw First Nation has partnered with BC Housing, Kw’umut Lelum and M’akola Housing Society to establish the Kennedy Street residences for Snuneymuxw members. A fourplex of newly built three-bedroom units are an off-reserve affordable rental housing opportunity for Snuneymuxw members who are working professionals.

5. IR4 (16 Units)
We are addressing a long-standing housing shortage with the biggest on-reserve housing initiative in over 50 years. This 16-unit townhome complex is a part of 64 new affordable rental homes for our members on-reserve. Located on the Gordon side of IR4, this development is set to begin construction in Spring 2026.

This transformative project is a part of 64 new affordable rental homes for our members on-reserve. Located on Warpath Road on IR4, this development is set to begin construction in Spring 2026.
We encourage our Snuneymuxw People to register with the BC Housing Registry online and learn more about affordable housing opportunities. You can indicate your Snuneymuxw membership in the Registry, and specifically select prioritization for homes within our Snuneymuxw BC Housing portfolio listed here. Or ask to be matched with the first suitable home that comes up. If you decline a housing opportunity for whatever reason, you won’t be penalized.
