Snuneymuxw Marine Division has been installing Beaver Dam Analogues & Post-Assisted Log Structures along the Nanaimo River. Recently, over two weeks, the Snuneymuxw Marine Division, in partnership with the DFO (Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans), installed Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) and Post-Assisted Log Structures (PALs) in key side channels of the North Nanaimo River.
These structures are designed to: Create deeper holding pools, Activate and extend flow through side channels, Keep channels connected longer during low flows, Slow down fast-moving water, entering the mainstem, Help retain valuable gravel used by Summer Chinook for spawning.
This restoration work is an important step toward protecting and rebuilding our endangered Summer Chinook salmon population.
