Security Checkpoints to be shut down on Sunday, February 7th
Chief and Council met last night and determined that the community security checkpoints are no longer a necessary measure of prevention for the transmission of COVID-19 in the community, and will be shut down on Sunday, February 7th at 6pm. While there are still some active cases in the community, they are under control and containment status of our Nation continues.
We all lived through the cluster of cases in our community since the beginning of this year and we know that we can get through whatever comes our way. COVID-19 is not going away any time soon but we can tackle it with the public health recommendations that are already in place.
This continues to be a scary time, but we have layers of protection in our community, such as 71% of Snuneymuxw residents receiving the first dose of the Moderna vaccine. Other layers of protection are to stay at home as much as possible, wear a mask in public places, do not visit other households, avoid non-essential travel and enhance personal and professional hygiene. It is extremely important that everyone implement the provincial health orders daily. This helps yourself, your family and our community tremendously. Keep in mind that Snuneymuxw community lived through this, and we know how to fight Covid-19, and all of us have to continue to work together to keep our community safe.
t̓hixwum, we urge you to continue to follow Provincial Health Orders such a staying home, not visiting with friends and family who do not live with you, wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing your hands. Please do not travel for non-essential reasons. This is not the time to let our guard down – please do not host or attend parties. While our community’s success in fighting this virus is cause for celebration, having parties is not the way to celebrate.
Thank you for all of your hard work to keep the community, and your loved ones safe.
