Food Fish Update – Important Information UPDATED 2016

Aug. 23/16

Food Fish Update

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) closed the Fraser River on Thursday August 11 due to conservation concerns regarding Sockeye Salmon fish stocks. The river will be closed until further notice.

This closure means that the Snuneymuxw Nation will NOT be receiving sockeye fish to distribute to our community.

We will be monitoring the DFO closure closely and will inform the community of any changes. If you would like to monitor the closure, please visit their their webpage at: For a newspaper article on the closure please see the Chilliwack Progress:

Please share with our members on behalf of SFN Fisheries.

We will again be participating in the community food fish distribution this summer. As we have done for the last several years, we aim to get fish to every SFN member.

With lower fishing returns expected for all species, including sockeye, we are unable to predict how much or what type of fish we will be able to supply or exactly when it will be available.  We’ll provide more details as we get information closer to the season.

Due to increasing membership and new staff , in order to receive fish you will need to show your ID status card and proof of a household residence (like your current BC Hydro bill) when you come collect to collect your fish.
