Homeless Outreach Coordinator

Job Description: 

Reporting to the Mental Health & Wellness Manager, the Homeless Outreach Coordinator is responsible for providing free of cost services to Nanaimo’s Indigenous homeless population, supplemented by Indigenous Knowledge. This includes but is not limited to assessing basic needs and providing access to services such as housing, medical care and counselling, and necessities.  Through outreach, engagement and ongoing relationships, the Homeless Outreach Coordinator focuses on reducing harm and supporting healing. This is a 1-year term position. Hours may vary per day and week. Standard hours of work are 8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday but occasional weekend and evening work may be required, based on operational needs.

Job Responsibilities: 

The Homeless Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Initiate contact, build trust and relationships to support homeless Indigenous peoples;
  • Assess needs and help individuals to remove barriers to accessing community resources such as personal identification, shelter, housing, entitlements, medical care, counselling, treatment;
  • Provide access and support for using PPE equipment;
  • Assist in navigating the outreach and support system based on needs;
  • Educate about safety, health risks, and prevention, in particular related to COVID-19, alcoholism, and drug addictions;
  • Identify gaps and barriers in available community resources and advocate for systemic changes to improve quality and coordination of community services;
  • Partner with community service providers to provide support, transportation, and supplies for homeless Indigenous peoples;
  • Assist in strategizing positive solutions to homelessness of Indigenous peoples in Nanaimo.
  • Provide mentorship and training to build internal capacity.
  • Assist clients in filling out referral forms.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Desired Experience: 
  • Experience in work related to social work, outreach programs or counselling is preferable.
  • Experience with harm reduction approaches and motivational interviewing is an asset.
Desired Education: 
  • High school diploma required.
  • An undergraduate degree or college diploma in a social science field is an asset.
  • Trauma-informed care training is an asset.
  • Alcohol and drug counselling training is an asset.
Additional Info: 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Organizational and planning skills.
  • Knowledge of the root causes of poor mental health and trauma amongst Indigenous people, including colonization, poverty, residential schools, and other mental health determinants.
  • Knowledge of mental health & addictions counseling is an asset.
  • Working knowledge/demonstrated ability to deal effectively with potentially hostile, demanding, confused/frustrated individuals and respond in a calm and tactful manner.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and efficient working relationships.
  • Ability to partner and engage/reach out to partners to provide services to homeless persons.
  • Knowledge of Nanaimo’s homeless support services and centers is an asset.
  • Ability to work as a team member as well as to be self-directed in carrying out daily duties.
  • Knowledge of Coast Salish culture, protocols/traditional practices is desirable.
  • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time and work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to track data and provide written reports.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills – written and oral.

Willingness Statements:

  • You are required to possess and maintain a valid class 5 BC driver’s license as well as appropriate insurance for work.
  • You may be required to work evenings and weekends.
  • You will be subject to satisfactory reference check and criminal records review.
  • You must adhere to the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s policies and procedures, including providing proof of valid Covid-19 Vaccine Pass
