Honoring Our Young Women Ceremony 2016
Our young women of Snuneymuxw are our future mothers, aunties, grandmothers, career women, council members and friends. They are our strength to build a healthy community so it is important to keep them healthy and that starts with recognizing them and their worth.
On June 16th, we celebrated 8 young women who had worked with our women Elders through the year to learn about being a Snuneymuxw woman and to make their shawls and learn to have pride in who they are and the person they can be. 60 people attended our ceremony at the Big House Kitchen where Gary Manson taught the women and their mentors a dance, each were recognized by their family member. A great dinner, chosen by the girls of pizza and salad, was devoured.
Thank you to everyone who made this possible; Lolly Good for her songs, Footprint of the Wolves for their welcoming and songs, Gary Manson for his wise words and the Snuneymuxw Wise Women’s group for their courage to be a part of teaching the young women the value in their traditions. And thanks to the Mental Health Team; Chris, Phillis and Wayne.
We hope that everyone takes some time today to acknowledge your daughters. Tell them you are proud of them or how much you love them. Let them know they are valued and that they can be anything they decide to be. Our community will be stronger and kinder as a result.
