Honoring our Young Women Ceremony
Eleven young women, Morgan Manson, Jennessa Mitchell, Veronica Walls-Good, Talyn Knighton, Deborah Tommy, Beatrice Castro, Josalyn Antoine Lightfoot, Mia Drake, Melyla Plasway, Tehya Point and Sue Yelton, were honored recently at a Ceremony at the Big House Kitchen.
These young women were honored by members of their family, community and Elders as well as Chief John Wesley, Alderman Bill Yoachim and the Mayor of Nanaimo, Bill McKay.
They were presented in the circle with shawls bearing one white feather to signify their purity of heart, mind and spirit. They were honored for their ability to be creators of life and keepers of the culture. Strong messages from the Elders welcomed them, then drums were beat and the singers sang to them. It was a proud moment for all 125 people who came but especially for the young women.
A clear message was sent to the men and young boys in the audience to honor these women, to treat them with respect and know that they will be the mothers of the future generations.
Many thanks to Phillis and Chris with the Health team and to the women who helped put this all together; Lolly Good, Trudy Johnny, Doris Sagatch, Mellissa Seward, Annie Seward, Faye Thomas, Stephanie Thomas, Rachel Sampson, Linda Walls, Michelle White, Niki Wedholm and Eleanor White.
A hay ch qa siem to Dave Bodley for the photos and video. Thanks to Proud Mary Canoe Club for the food and help and to the Mayor and Chief for attending and giving honor to the occasion.
