Baby Blanketing Ceremony 2015
Every year new Snuneymuxw babies are welcomed in the spring. Their mothers make them blankets to celebrate their coming into the world. The Blanket not only wraps the child for warmth but also for safety.
By blanketing our new babies we here at Snuneymuxw are making a promise to keep them safe in the arms of the community. This year, Faith Tommy, Tristian Seward-McGimpsey and Arianna Point were officially welcomed into the arms of the community.
The blankets were designed and hand sewn by the mothers; Rachel Sampson, Mellissa Seward and Nancy Point respectively and they were gorgeous. Their families stood up for them and proudly accepted the welcome and promise of safety that was expressed. The three other babies that were not able to make it to the ceremony were Brayden Marshall, Isabella and Terri Jones Jr.
It takes a community to raise a child and so thanks go out to those who made this event so successful!
Thank you to Charles for allowing this to happen once again this year, Regan for arranging rides, Chris for arranging all the decorations and helping endlessly with the mom’s as they were creating their blankets and Phillis for also helping endlessly with the creation of the blankets.
Thanks to Wayne for helping set up and bringing the PA system, Kate for doing the invitations, Val Caroline and Coburn for assisting with all the decorating (which looked totally awesome - way to go team) and Ally and Char for making sure our mom’s and their families were able to get the event safely.
Thanks to Council Member Erralyn Thomas for being our voice for the night (way to go cuz you did an awesome job) and Council Member Paul Wyse-Seward for leading our mom’s and their babies into the event with your dance group. It was totally amazing as always and thank you again to Paul for your words to our new babies and their families!
