3rd Annual Snuneymuxw Days
Snuneymuxw Days kicked off with a family fun night held at the band office parking lot. Sweet Ann Canoe Club prepared a dinner of hot dogs and hamburgers, with chips and drinks. For the kids, there was a bouncy castle, dunk tank, and arts and crafts activities set up. But the highlight of the night was the fry bread baking and eating competitions. The fry bread baking competitors were: Denise White, Alfred Tommy, Talia Wilson, April White, and Lorna Seward. The Judges were: Chief Doug White 3rd, Councillor Doug White 2nd, Heather White, Councillor Karen Ahenakew, and Jenn Wyse. After a difficult, delicious, deliberation the judges awarded 1st place to Alfred Tommy, 2nd place to Denise White, and 3rd place to April White.
After the baking competition Artie White, Shay Pointe, Robin Good, Tyson Seward, Pearl Haggard, Melissa Pointe, Zachary Wilson, Timothy Jones, and Veronica Walls-Good went head to head in a fry bread eating competition. It was reported that the cheers and laughter could be heard from one end of IR1 to the other! The big winner of the fry-bread eating competition was Miss Robin Good. Huge congratulations and thank you for everyone who participated in the nights events.
Snuneymuxw Days continued on Saturday, July 20th with a day trip to Newcastle Island. The day started with a welcome from Chief Doug White, followed by a meal catered by the pavilion on Newcastle. Community members spent the day visiting with one another, and exploring the island. The day ended with an interpretive nature tour with Celestine Alec. Celestine shared her knowledge about the history of Newcastle Island with the group, as well as shared stories connected to the island and the plant medicines and their uses that can be found there. It was an enchanting one hour tour.
On Sunday, membership gathered for our Annual General Meeting and audit review, which was held in the Chief and Council chambers. The day started at 11:30 with a delicious lunch prepared for the members by the Sweet Ann Canoe Club. After lunch the Chief and council began with introductions and an overview of the work accomplished in the past year. They were followed by the department heads that provided an update to the membership. After a short break, the audit was presented and followed up with a question and answer period.
Snuneymuxw days would not be possible without the participation of the community and we would like to thank everyone who travelled and who attended the weekend activities. We would also like to thank those who organized the weekend.
