Children who witness abuse counselling program

For Snuneymuxw First Nation children and adolescents who have witnessed abuse in their homes.

How does family violence affect children?

  • Children who witness the abuse of their mothers live with fear and anxiety waiting for the next violent moment to occur.

The goals of a children's support group are:

  • To let children know they are not alone and that other children come from similar situations
  • To define abuse and explain the cycle of violence
  • To help children understand their own personal rights
  • To teach problem solving skills

Individual counselling is available, short term, for children who may not be ready for a group.

The support group provides a safe place where children can:

  • Learn and talk about their feelings
  • Learn healthy ways to express their anger, hurt, fear and many other feelings
