Alcoholism/Addiction is a primary, chronic, genetic, progressive and potentially fatal illness that affects individuals and their family members.

Addiction to alcohol or other drugs is a complex disease that affects a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being. Willpower alone cannot stop the progress of this disease any more than it can stop any other life- threatening disease.

Recovery from this disease is possible. If you believe drinking, drug use, gambling or other obsessive behaviours are negatively impacting you or someone in your family; the counselors at the Addiction Recovery Program can help you learn how this disease has affected your life, develop a plan to treat the disease, and support you through the changes you make in your life necessary to recover.

Family members affected by the drinking/drug using or other dysfunctional behaviours of their loved ones can become as ill as the alcoholic/addict. There are programs available to help people recover from this codependent, enabling way of thinking and behaving.

We offer a confidential service to our clients; which includes an assessment of the severity of the problem, individual and family counseling, referral to treatment programs for substance abuse and gambling, follow-up counseling and a Recovery Support Group for clients who have completed treatment.

The counselors in the Addictions Recovery Program are part of the Snuneymuxw Health Team. We work together with other Health Team members to offer whatever services our clients need to further their recovery goals. The Community Nurses, Family Healing Program, Children & Youth Counsellor, Community Mental Health Program, and the various workshops or programs they provide are all available through a referral from your addictions counsellor.

Quite often, a prerequisite for entry to programs that deal with in-depth emotional or psychological issues is a minimum time clean and sober. Starting a healing journey for these issues can begin by coming in to talk to one of the Addiction Counsellors. We are here to listen, guide and support you at every step in your journey.
