Residential School History:

1867, the government of Canada adopted a policy to assimilate First Nations people into the Canadian society.
  • The Residential Schools were a partnership between the government and the churches
  • The schools operated from the late 1800s to 1980
  • 126 Residential schools were in operation

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) states that one million children attended Residential Schools and only 50% of those children who attended returned to their communities.

Community Involvement

The Family Healing Program has an Advisory Committee made up of Elders from both communities. The Committee provides direct input to the program delivery.
The Community members themselves also have direct access to all of the program staff.
