The Snuneymuxw protected the environment for thousands of years by following their traditional laws. The environment is now in a very poor state. The Snuneymuxw are negotiating for the following: - An environmental audit and remediation plan for all eco-systems in Snuneymuxw Territory.
- Environmental protection measures to ensure better community-based and coordinated protection.
The federal and provincial governments generally agree with these principles but they are reluctant to fund the environmental audit and remediation process and want to maintain control over environmental protection. These are matters for further negotiations. The Nanaimo River estuary is the largest estuary on Vancouver Island and the 5th largest in British Columbia. It encompasses approximately 820 ha of intertidal habitat and is the largest intertidal habitat within the Snuneymuxw traditional territory. The estuary is ranked the highest of 407 coastal BC wetlands in terms of fisheries resource value, productivity and social/recreational value.
